Analogue Import Problems on FCP and Decklink
on Feb 12, 2010 at 10:17:44 pm

HI all

I know this is possibly a Decklink problem so I have posted on the Blackmagic forum as well
But thought I'd give it a go on here as lots of you have Decklink HD cards and it takes a while to get a response over there....

I posted this problem a few months ago and still isn't cured.
I have problems capturing analogue material through the Decklink Extreme HD card into FCP
I get lots of lines and interference on the preview monitor on FCP and thats what it records
I replaced the card and still the same
I connect a DVD player or Beta SP directly to the Decklink input, ie bypassing my router/switcher and still the same interference.
My last resort was to connect my DVD player to the HDMI input and I can't get that working at all !!
I change all the settings in the Decklink preferences, restart, load new drivers, go back to old driver and still the same problem.
I have moved the card to another slot in my Mac Pro
I can't believe its a problem with the seating of the card or the MAc as the SDI input works perfectly.
Obviously I am now desperate to get this fixed with a large job next week involving importing dvd's etc.

I have the latest version of FCP V7
OSX 10.6.2
Mac Pro

Any help really appreciated

Is there a reason you're capturing analog from the DVD instead of using MPEG Streamclip?

If they're protected DVDs, the MacroVision might be giving issues, but you said you have the same problem from a Beta Deck?

Well I just find it easier to grab selections from the DVD that way, the macro protection cant be the problem because it used to be fine, and yes, same problem importing Beta SP and yesterday a VHS ( yes really !! )

[Paul Jones] "My last resort was to connect my DVD player to the HDMI input and I can't get that working at all !! "

You cant use the HDMI connection from a DVD player. Part of the spec HDMI spec prevents that from working.

The analog problem seems like a cabling issue or something to do with your video reference. Since you have had more than one card, I doubt its the card.

Well a few people has asked about the video referencing...Not sure how to tackle this
Without looking, If I remember, I have black and burst fed to the ref input...I presume this is right ?

What happens then if you disconnect the ref, as your DVD player is not synced to it...?

Hi paul,
The DVD you never know, but you shouldn't have problems with the Betacam at all.
That should work with a "Black Burst" or even without any kind of reference. The very "Video IN" should be enough.
I would recommend you to try to fix the Betacam capture first, then you may try to pass the DVD signal through the Betacam.
I gave up long ago working with BM due to the problems to get a good connexion. The big black cable made my life really miserable; I had to fixit every 5 minute to get my picture in the monitor.
Best,
rafael
