Can't move drive icon or files
on Feb 12, 2010 at 5:16:08 am

(i posted this on the OS X forum, but no replies, so, sorry to bother you guys with this...)

I have an external FW800 drive on which my info tells me that i have all (read & write) permissions on it, and i can move files to it, but i can't move them from folder to folder while on the drive, nor copy anything from that drive to anything else. i can't even move the drive icon on my desktop. What gives? I'm on 10.5.8

Thanks again!

What is the format of the drive?

Is it NTFS? Is it FAT 32? Is it MacOS Extended?

MacOS Extended (Journaled) - like my other ones...and i can't even move stuff to the burn folder to clear it off...but i'm sure there is some simple solution.

Are you on a network? Does another station have the drive mounted too?

Maybe your computer still thinks another computer has it mounted…have you tried rebooting or disconnecting from the network temporarily?

Thanks. I did that, no change. I would try to copy or move these files off this disk and reformat it, but it won't even let me copy any files or folders! Yikes! Actually, i seem to be able to "copy", but i just can't paste anything that is copied from that drive...

Media Manager to the rescue! I took the drive to my other Mac. Same things happened. So now i'm copying files via Media Manager, and it seems to be working. Once that is all done, i'll reformat the drive and start over...but i still wish i knew how to fix this problem. Thanks for your help, though.

Although you have verified that you have read and write permissions on the drive, make sure that "ignore permissions on this drive" is checked in the drive info box.
