What is this transition?
on Feb 10, 2010 at 10:33:11 pm

Hello all,
I am working on a short film opening montage and I am trying to give it a sort of "street" look with quick, subtle, cuts and a very organic feel. I recently saw a music video from the artist "Common" called "The People."

This is a beautifully filmed and directed music video of Common rapping while different things on the street are taking place. In this video, they use a transition of an orange, sort of solar flare but more subtle transition.

I am dying to find out what this transition is called and how I can execute it.
Here is the video:

The transition takes place at 0:25-0:27 and throughout the video.

I have tried to re-create this transition but to no avail.

If anyone could be of help I would be very grateful. Thanks!

Looks like a Film Burn transition or a Light Leak transition. There are several ways to do it, so try doing a search for either and I am sure you will find something.

My guess is that the footage is from Artbeats "Film Clutter".

Looks like a 'canned' light leak that you can buy from several different vendors. Google 'light leaks', or better yet, scan some film and build your own. That way it won't look like every other video with this FX.

All those years of training as a telecine op, film camera assistant and lab processor, I remember how hard we all tried to avoid those problems.

Every time I see people adding edge fog, flashed frames, orange light leaks, grit, grain, scratches and weave I cringe at how hokey and pseudo retro it looks. Nothing hides crap content and nothing is more annoying than covering good content with crap effects. Please just edit and give these dud retro FX & transitions a rest.

I hear what your saying there. It's as worn out, as the ADO/squeeze-back was in 1985! What's next? How about a nice plug-in to get the tube camera burn-in look!

With you Michael...

though I am a sucker for the 2-strip technicolor look.
