sync timecode locked seperate audio to video rushes
on Jan 27, 2010 at 10:21:28 am

Hello I'm just about to start editing a Doc where we have three separate cameras shooting in different locations but only one sound recordist running around between then, recording on to a hard disk with the master time code coming from the recordist via lock-it-boxes, so no de-rigging will be required. My question is, what would be the best way to sync the sound files from the hard disk to the video picture rushes in FCP, any ideas?

Yes. Check out this workflow I presented at NAB. It will be right up your alley.

What Jeremy suggests is that you don't have common timecode, and have to sync trough PluralEyes.
But, you do have commont timecode, so you can merge in the bin if you like, just sort on TCin, select matching pairs and do a merge on TC.

If the cams have rolled for a long time, it's doable by hand.
(half hour of tedious work will get you there)

However, BWF files might be problematic with FCP.
check http://www.spherico.com for some in depth info on FCP & BWF.

But if there are tons of clips,
an option is to use my BWF /QT merge application.
(it comes with the FCPauxTC reader, download a demo from my site).
This thing can paste the BWF's into the QT's.
Do so before editing, as when the track amount changes, FCP won't relink.
Another gotcha is NOT to merge dual mono and stereo files.
It works swell, but you won't be able to media manage.
(the sound guy can split poly BWF's into multi for you)

Or, use Intelligent Assistents Sync 'n Link.

No, my suggestion is if you DO have common tc. The presentation was TOD tc on all cams, but if everything is locked, it's even easier.

Jeremy,
Mea Culpa, my bad.
I've watched the video several days ago, Andreas pointed me to it.

Inbetween i've been writing code for DSLR syncing for 16 hours a day, and it seems that with too many things floating trough my head, i've mixed things that don't belong together...

:) I know how you feel. I am editing 5 different projects right now, and sometimes I just lose track. I was actually arguing for a different version the other day with a client, and then I realized I was talking about the wrong project. Woops!
