Viewer & Canvas appear different
on Jan 22, 2010 at 2:42:01 pm

I have a ProRes file in the viewer and it looks sharp, however, when added to the timeline and then rendered, it looks much softer. I'm sure this is a simple fix, just not sure where to look.

Thanks everyone,
Craig

"and then rendered"

Why is it being rendered? What are the item properties of the sequence you're editing into?

All the best,

Tom

[craig whit] "I'm sure this is a simple fix, just not sure where to look. "

The Viewer is a QT Player. it will display your movie natively.
The Canvas is a scaled down and compressed representation of the sequence settings, not your clip. Your clip is being processed by the sequence settings and then processed by the Canvas.

It's probably the most common confusion to newbs with FCP. You can never judge the quality of your footage on the Canvas. You need to judge it in a separate broadcast monitor. Most people aren't set up with one and are therefore confused by the Canvas display.

Set up your system properly, with an outboard monitor and this problem goes away.
