Colorista - Hardware cannot render at the requested size and depth
on Jan 17, 2010 at 11:23:22 am

Hi,

I've done a search but am not clear how to proceed.

I've got a 1920x1080 ProRes timeline and on clips with Colorista
applied I get a warning that says, "Hardware cannot render at the requested size and depth".

Below are my machine specs - I just want to know if there's a work-around for what I've currently got, or if my system isn't beefy enough to handle the task.
[Note, I don't have a IO box like Matrox or Kona, etc.]

Thanks in advance,

Wayne

Hi Wayne,
Your GPU is not enough.
Try unplugging your second display when rendering, this should free some resources for FC to work.
If doesn't works like that you will need to work in 720 or with an 8b codec.

I concur. That issue typically means the graphics card isn't powerful enough. And FCP tends to rely more on the graphics card for some plugins...Colorista is one of them.

Replace it with an ATI 4870 or 3870.

Gents,

Thanks for taking the time.

You were both quite right about the problem - and Rafael, your work-around suggestion worked brilliantly - thanks.

I just unplugged my 2nd monitor at the render stage and all was hunky-dory.

I'll need to get a beefier GPU and/or Mac - no doubt.

Thanks again,

Wayne

I'm waiting for the next Mac Pro update to get one.
The story of the GPU is very limiting.
Things some time works, some times no.
Many times you do not get the warning and after rendering you fin something very ugly.
Everything that is processed in the GPU could be processed in the CPU, but is up to the developers to add the option.
