transcode PAL to NTSC
on Nov 25, 2009 at 2:59:48 pm

Hello,
I have a video that has beem ‘filmed‘ and edited in DVCPRO 50 PAL.
I have to finish it on a NTSC DVD.
What is the best transcode for this job?
Is it possible to do in a FinalCut?
I have created a ntsc sequence with this material. Than I exported as a quicktime ntsc and it does not play well.

What am I doing wrong?
Thakyou for the help
Mariana

Hi Mariana,
You won't get a good result in FC, unless you use something like Nattress Standard Conversion or Twixtor.
Try Compressor. You must set the "Frame Control: ON" and the Retiming filter to BEST.
It will take some time.
You can do the MPEG-2 compression at the same time, but I think you better do it in two steps.
Make your NTSC movie first, and if you are happy make the MPEG-2.
Whatever the method you use, don't export again to DV50.That would add more compression. Try Prores.

Rafael, thankyou for the feedback.
What if a take my dvcpro50 PAL timeline and export, using compressor, to a dvcpro50 NTSC or to DV NTSCanamorfic.
Would it be ok? Would the soud be on sinc ?

OK, I know the quality would go very bad, but It is so urgent , and the main question is to play it on an ntsc dvd player with out jumping.

Thankyou again
Mariana

Hi Mariana,
First I would recommend you to export a Self-contained QT movie.
In the Compressor Presets, go to "Advanced Format Conversion> Standard Definition.
- Duplicate the DVCPro 50 Anamorphic NTSC preset (like that your NTSC movie will be 720x480, ready for the MPEG-2. If you chose any 8/10b Uncompress or Prores, the clip would be 720x486, no standard for the DVD).
- In Encoder, change DVCPro50 by Prores HQ.
- Set "Control Frame: ON".
- Set Resize filter: Best.
- Output fields: Same as source.
- Retiming: I would make e test with BETTER (instead of best).
You can export your movie.
But PAID ATTENTION: When you import again your NTSC movie to Compressor to make the MPEG-2, make sure that in the Inspector> Video Format tab> Field Dominance is set to Lower.
Poat if you need any clarification.
Cheers,
rafael

With the Natress standards conversion you have to follow the steps to the letter, but i dopes work. A simpler way is to use Episode Pro, just amazing.

Hi Mariana,
I told you to change the codec to Prores or uncompress.
If you export to DVCpro again you are just adding more compression.

Hello Rafael,
yes I did as you said:
- In Encoder, change DVCPro50 by Prores HQ.
- Set "Control Frame: ON".
- Set Resize filter: Best.
- Output fields: Same as source.
- Retiming: I would make e test with BETTER (instead of best).
export
and than the MPEG with Field Dominance is set to bottom first

I do not know how the video ended up with stripes all over. Something with the field did not go right.

Thankyou once again
Mariana

[mariana sussekind] "and than the MPEG with Field Dominance is set to bottom first "
Mariana;
In the MPEG-2 compressor you must check Lower First in the "Video Format" tab. Also in the "Control Frame" you can set Lower instead of "As Source".
Mariana, it shouldn't be any Interlacing problem. All the way the have been kept as Lower first.
