Multiple codecs in FCP sequence
on Nov 19, 2009 at 4:06:20 pm

I'm working on a documentary with FCP 6.06. There are 4 codecs:

1)HDV 1440x1080, 29.97, 1080i60

2)DVCPro 1280x1080, 29.97, 1080i60

3)XDCAM 1920x1080, 29.97, 1080i60

4)Apple Pro Res 422, 1920x1080, 29.97

I've worked with various codecs before and had crashing problems but that was when we mixed interlaced and progressive footage. Am I at risk using the 4 codecs above in the same sequence? If so, is there anything that can be done, any transcoding recommendations that I should be aware of? Thanks very much.

Nick

I'd work in a ProRes 1080i sequence.

Ok. So other codecs will play more fluidly unrendered in a pro res sequence? It's a big choice to make so just want to be sure before I begin editing. Thanks so much.

[Nick August-Perna] "Ok. So other codecs will play more fluidly unrendered in a pro res sequence?"

FCP can handle different codecs (as long as they are FCP rt codecs), it's different frame rates you have to be leery of. They work, but they don't render properly.

Not really, You can always change a sequence codec.

If you want to keep your file size down, DVCPro HD is a good offline codec, just don't choose HDV.
