Exporting from FCE to FCP
on Nov 17, 2009 at 1:13:59 pm

Hi
Does anyone know if you can export a project from FCE4 to FCP6.0.5?

We are looking to capture tapes at either 8 bit uncompressed or ProRes422, and then send the files through FCS to create DV files for producers to rough cut on imacs. Once cut they would send the FCE project file to the edit suite and open it into FCP where the full rez media would be connected.
Question... what happens to the timecode? Does FCE recognize the source timecode or start everying from zero?

Any advice on this most welcome!!!!

The DV timecode is not displayed within FCE, but it is embedded in the QT file. You need to make sure the DV file timecode that you create matches the ProRes media. What format is the original media you're capturing?

Hi Tom
We'll be capturing from Beta SP tapes to either 8bit Uncompressed or ProRes 422 (yet to be decided as we still have some G5's).
So you're saying that the FCE project will carrying the TC info on each clip even though it's not accually displayed?
Then as long as our high and low rez copies of the media have matching TC we can simply use the "reconnect media" comand in FCP to do the online edit?

Thanks

Assuming your recompressed DV material taken from the uncompressed or ProRes maintains that the timecode and reel information from the Beta tape that's also embedded in the uncompressed/ProRes file. If that happens you'll get the timecode. If that doesn't happen then the timecode is lost and you will not be able to reconnect. I would advise you to test the work flow before you implement it to make sure nothing is lost in this trip around the block.
