aspect ratio nightmare
on Nov 1, 2009 at 12:27:43 am

I am having some pretty extreme issues with aspect ratios. Can someone tell me why DV has a different aspect ratio than regular NTSC and how do you deal with this when making videos for TV with a DV cam? i.e. 3:2 vs 4:3. -- 720x480 640x480 -- What is the meaning of this?

Furthermore, does DV have a special aspect ratio for 16:9?

Because DV works with a different pixel aspect ratio. This is really basic stuff and is readily available with a web search. NTSC is not 640x480 BTW. It's 720x486 and uses the same pixel aspect as DV. Yes, anamorphic uses a different aspect aspect ratio as well.

All the best,

Hi Steve,
Don't get mixed up with the "3x2".
As Tom say, you have two sizes: 720x486 and 720x480.
"3x2" is just to call the 720x480 size.
720 divided by 480 = 3/2

Those 720x486 or 720x480 pixels can be 4x3 or Anamorphic (16x9).
3x2 is noting related with the pixels aspect.
I think that this term just create confusion.
