workflow for working with dvcpro hd and xdcam (and beta footage
on Oct 8, 2009 at 7:45:26 pm

I am working on a project which is about 60% xdcam ex (720p) 15% DVCPro HD 720p and the rest in DV. I have to supply the client with a quicktime (animation codec has been requested) from which the client will make a SD DVD.
Everything is PAL and I'm currently using FCP 6.06, but could upgrade to version 7 if beneficial.

I think the best thing would be to work in ProRes. Would it?
I'm a bit wary that if I transcode all the footage (I am assuming I can) to ProRes HD PAL (720x 576 anamorphic) it may effect the aspect ratio of either the DVCprohd footage or the XDCam ex footage. Will it? Both these formats have different frame sizes and pixel aspect ratios and I'm not sure how these equate,

Any pointers/guidance very gratefully received,

Phil

Hi Phil,
Just drop all your footage in a DV PAL Anamorphic sequence. Whatever the codec.
FC will take care of the pixels, size, etc.
Before exporting:
- Set the sequence codec to Animation
- Set "Render all YUV material in High Precision" an "Render Motion Effects: BEST".
Should works fine.
Cheers,

If I do that won't I essentially be converting my footage to DV? Not ideal as it's a nasty codec. Plus everything will have to be rendered as I edit.

If it's as simple as that what's the point in ProRes?

Not sure I fully understand.

You don't need to convert nothing.
The idea is to work with the native codecs in a sequence with the specs of your delivery movie.

[Phil Doherty] " Plus everything will have to be rendered as I edit. "
You can not edit in an Animation sequence. No RT.
Set the sequence in whatever codec that makes your editing easy and change the codec before exporting.
