Which prores codec is equal to but dont overshoot HDV quality..

Hey

Now I have been looking into the new prores codecs. As I understand it they in general enable better rendering than HDV. For my workflow I therefore consider capturing into prores. BUT my starting point is HDV and since filesize does matter to me I want to hear your opinion to which prores codec to use.

I will upgrade my FCP package to get acces to the new codecs. Which of those are equal to but not higher quality than HVD. In other words whats the lightest prores codec that still captures all the HDV quality ??

Hope the question makes sense :0)

Best wishes

Jakob

I personally would use ProRes LT.

As with all thinks like this, it's best to run some tests. Probably Pro Res "SQ" or "LT" would best suit your needs.

I would only add that if space is an issue for you, depending on the amount of footage you have to work with, you might consider doing an offline/online workflow with ProRes Proxy as the offline codec, then onlining with ProRes LT or SQ.

You likely won't see any difference between using LT compared to the bigger SQ or HQ codecs. HDV is already so highly compressed, it would be difficult to see any added compression that LT might add.

Hey

First of all thanks to all of you 3 posters. This forum rocks :0), great that you take the time to help a newbie like me.

I will try the LT codec out as soon as I get hold of the update. If any of you have seen any tutorials on the online/offline way of working I would be very interested.

Best wishes

Jakob
