Exported AVIs: How to get to a PC?
on Sep 23, 2009 at 2:20:27 pm

I've got 50GB of AVI files from FCP that I need to send to someone editing with a PC. I've got an external hard drive ordered that I am planning to use to ship the media, but I'm trying to figure out how to format the external USB drive so the files that I add from the Mac can be used on the PC.

I tried the MS-DOS FAT 32 format in Disk Utility, but that couldn't be read by my PC. Is there any format that will allow an external drive to be accessed by both a Mac and PC? If the new hard drive arrives formatted to NTFS, will that work?

My back up option is to transfer the files to a PC via File Sharing and then add to the external, but I'm hoping to not transfer 50GB over my network. Suggestions?

Thanks.

[Matt Larson] "I tried the MS-DOS FAT 32 format "
Don't try FAT-32. They have a limit of 4Gbs files.

Only FAT-32. But you can't use it.

You will need an application (Paragon NFST) to manage it from your Mac.

You can also format your HD for Mac. The PC will need "MacDrive" to control the HD.

I knew there was a 4GB limit in there somewhere, so I exported all the clips to be about 3.5GB.

Looks like FAT-32 should work then?

Yes, it will work, but there can be other issues.

50 Gig is not that much. A half decent gigabit network is faster than your average el-cheapo transport drive, so that will not make a difference in time.
(I edit on gig-ethernet, although with iSCSI)

You should be able to get about 20 - 30 MB speed.
So it should take you less than an hour over your network.

(Of course Rafaels solutions are great, but if it's a one timer, be done with it the easy and safe way..)

Excellent advice. I'll transfer to the PC first, thanks!
