FCP 7 captures HDV without .mov extension
on Sep 16, 2009 at 11:39:45 pm

I've just installed FCS 3 and now when I capture HDV into Apple Intermediate Codec, I'm getting text files instead of mov files.

Is this a bug?
or
Is this a new way FCP handles files?

what's going on?

FCP seems to be reading the files fine in the project that I captured from, but if I try to reorganize the files, FCP states that the file isn't recognized.

I know I can add the extension with automator, but I didn't have to do this "adding" in the last version.

Thanks for your help...

Capture HDV as HDV. Apple intermediate is a lossy and BLOATED codec rife with issues. For one, it doesn't capture TIMECODE...something that is rather important. And the file sizes are nearly double that of native HDV.

If you don't want to capture native HDV, but as another format, then use ProRes. Larger files, but MUCH BETTER than AIC.

Shane, thanks for your comment...

I just thought AIC was better than native HDV...

I love Proress (is just the amount of space).

Next time I will use proress.

appreciated

Oh no...Apple Intermediate was the patch that people used to capture HDV as before FCP had native HDV support. You had to use Lumiere HD or HDVxDV to import, and had to do so as AIC.

Yes, I'm seeing the same problem on my system with newly captured ProRes Files. However, looking back at my older ProRes files captured in FCP 6 before Snow Leopard, I notice those files didn't have any file extension either. However, they did contain the file type description as "QuickTime movie" as the new ProRes files captured via fire wire (note I said captured not converted) contain the file type decryption of "document" and control clicking (right clicking) on the file and clicking on info shows the file has no extension and the "hide extension" is NOT selected. Further it shows the file being created by TextEdit (which I suppose is the default for document files).

dear friends,

when I capture with snow leopard in apple prores the finder doesn't recognize te clips as video clips and I cannot change the default application in the file info....also the preview in the finder doesn't appear and i see all te clip as text files.....

since quicktime has radically changed, i reinstall the old one at:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3678?viewlocale=en_US

and yesterday I uploaded the player for snow leopard here:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/quicktimepl...

but nothing has changed...any ideas...? Suggestions?

dear friends....

i solve the problem with this fast and simple application...

http://renamer.com/

and I rename the prores video files adding the extension .mov

I cannot investigate anymore about snow leopard and fcp relationships....i've to finish my videos and so i found something that can solve this bug....if somebody else has other solutions i'm here....

Hi Alvaro,
In the lower left corner of the FC export window, there is a button "Hide extension". You may have it checked in.

Anyone figure this out? I'm capturing HDV from tape to the HDV codec...and the files have no extension. It's not really too much of an issue, unless you want to import those files into Final Cut...the software doesn't recognize them as valid video clips and won't import...

I noticed something interesting today as I was using FCP Reconnect...there is a checkbox for "files don't have .mov extension" so the guys who wrote this software made a workaround for this same issue we're all having.

Today I had the same problem and nobody in the German FCP could help me.

I just repaired the user right with the disk disk service software and - STRIKE! - it works. Now FCP adds the suffix .mov to the clips in the directory during the capturing and the HDV capturing works with the regular logg-window with app. 3 MB per second (by using the Apple pro res codec the files are nearly 9 MB per sec., now the rendering is much more faster).

Make sure you have all of the latest updates to FCP. A fix to this problem was introduced a while back in an update.
