FCP settings for PAL
on Sep 12, 2009 at 12:04:11 am

Hello All.

I'm going to be shooting a project in the UK in PAL format on the Sony EX-1 (1080p/25).

I haven't shot in PAL before and am wondering if anyone can help me with the proper FCP settings for Log and Transfer/Sequence Settings/Exports.

Any thoughts and/or experience would be greatly appreciated!

Josh

Hi Josh,
You don't need to care much about.
The metadata of the EX-1 files do not allow mistakes by FC. The files are properly recognized (size, time-base, field order,..). Just import and edit.

There are sequence preset, but you don't even need that.
Open any sequence, drag a clip and let FC conforms the sequence to the clip.
In HD the only difference between NTSC and PAL is in the time base. Size, pixels aspects and fields order are the same.

So FCP will know that my footage was shot PAL at 1080p/25?

PAL/NTSC only exist in the SD world, you're in HD so it becomes irrelevant.

What is important (as Rafael mentions) is the timebase - in your case 25fps, and frame size (1080). You can use an easy setup or just drop your first clip into a sequence and click OK when FCP tells you it's best for the sequence settings to be the same as the clip settings.

thanks SO much for this!
what would you recommend codec and settings-wise for exports (particularly web) with this camera and workflow?

Hi Josh,
just export keeping the 16x9 proportions (320x180, 480x270,..) with Square pixels.
The best codec is H264. Double pass, key frames Automatic and Limit data-rate try 400/500 Kbps.
If your footage is interlaced you need to de-interlaced it.
Cheers,
rafael
