Macbook Pro vs. Mac Mini?
on Jan 31, 2019 at 5:21:31 am

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I'm looking to buy a new computer. My budget is fairly limited (>$2,500 USD), so my options are pretty much as follows:

1. Get a 13-inch Macbook Pro (without touchbar), and spec it up to :
2.5GHz dual-core 7th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz

Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640

16GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory

512GB SSD storage

... and then just get an external monitor to make up for the tiny screen size. OR...

2. Get a Mac Mini and spec that up too:
3.2GHz 6‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 4.6GHz)

32GB 2666MHz DDR4

Intel UHD Graphics 630

512GB SSD storage

Both of these options are around the same price, I just can't tell which would be better for working mostly in After Effects and Cinema 4D (some octane).

Any help would be appreciated! I'm not good with tech specs.

The 13-inch Macbook Pro (without touchbar) has only two Thunderbolt 3 posts. Connect an external monitor and an external charger, and you can't connect an external hard drive without unplugging one of the others.

The Mac mini has 4 TB3 ports + 2 USB 3 posts and HDMI for monitoring. Also it has 4 more CPU cores and doesn't need an external charger.
Which make it more practical.

I agree with Paul, the Mac Mini with 6 Cores and 32GB memory will perform way better than the MacBook Pro with only 2 Cores and 16GB.
