Ingestion errors

Hi folks,
I've been indoctrinated to copy/backup the entire film structure of a camera card onto my hard drives.

So here's what I do:
Insert camera card in my Macbook Pro slot and open. I see a "Private" folder in the card folder in Mac OS Mountain Lion.
I drag to copy onto a folder in my internal hard drive. I drag to make another copy on an external hard drive.
Minutes go by, then I see the error message: The operation can’t be completed because an item with the name “PRIVATE” already exists.
Sometimes I get an error message that names a different item that already exists, usually a hidden file or folder.
It _looks_ like the entire content has been copied.

But how can I do this more smoothly with the Mac Finder? What do these error messages mean?

Thanks for your thoughts,
Robert

I'd recommend that you stop using drag and drop to back up data.

Get a program like Dropsync and let it do the important work of making sure that every file gets copied across correctly.

Hi Greg,
Thanks for your suggestion. I will research Dropsync.
Seems to be an android and phone app featuring Facebook use and dropbox interface, anything but video production.
Still researching. Can you provide a link?
Are there no good ways to use the finder to back up cards?
Thanks,
Robert

Thanks, Greg.
Apparently there are two different softwares with the same name, a cause of confusion.
The site says:
"DropSync is a versatile Mac App for working with collections of files in different locations. Whether you're pushing edits to a webserver or backing up a huge photo collection, DropSync helps get the job done with a minimum of fuss."

This seems like overkill for what I need to do, which is just copy files from a card to a drive. Though I'm sure it works.

I've heard of other utilities that do this and enable a checksum comparison to confirm accurate copying. Back to research. Though why can't I just do this in the finder?

All best,
Robert
