Folder Greyed Out in Finder
on Jul 3, 2016 at 3:42:14 pm

I have a 1TB drive I have been using on an editing project.
Today I went to add some material to a footage folder,
which has suddenly been greyed out,
and am unable to open.

I ran Disk Utility and drive checked out.
I rebuilt the directory using Disk Warrior.
No issues were found, yet the folder
is still greyed out.

Plenty of space let on drive, too.
Thoughts?

It sounds like it may be a permissions problem. Right-click on the Folder in the Finder windows and select Get Info. Then at the bottom in the Sharing & Permissions section see if your account has Read & Write or No Access.

Permissions were fine.
I ended up just making a new folder and copying that folder into it.
FIXED!

After researching online, this was easiest way to fix an issue with the date.
Other fixes meant coding in the terminal, this was much easier.

Issue arose after a power surge while working
out of this folder, which was fine just prior.
Finder showed this original being created in 1984!

Thanks.

Glad you got it fixed. Not sure what could have caused it. 1984! Maybe it expired and you just had to renew it (like a Library card). lol :-D

Cool tip. Did you drag the greyed out folder itself into a new folder? Or its contents?

Can a greyed out folder even be moved? Can you change the name of a greyed out folder? That should do the trick too.

I copied the folder itself.
I was unable to open/access contents/rename
the grey folder.

I checked the copy and everything copied properly.
Much easier than anticipated!

Just to make sure i understand, once the folder was moved inside a new folder, it could then be opened and all the files inside it were then readable?

Yup.
Apparently the creation date on original had gotten changed to 1984(!),
and creating a new folder of course reflected the more current date.

Don't quite get it, but that is what my research online indicated.
