Hardware Overview:

Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro4,1
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.93 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per processor): 8 MB
Memory: 16 GB
Processor Interconnect Speed: 6.4 GT/s
Boot ROM Version: MP41.0081.B07
SMC Version (system): 1.39f5
SMC Version (processor tray): 1.39f5

Any help greatly appreciated.
Regards

Hi Steve, From the Model Identifier: MacPro4,1 it looks like you have a Mac Pro "Eight Core" 2.93 (2009/Nehalem). According to Apple Support, Yosemite will run on a "Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)" and since your Mac Pro is a 2009, it is supported so feel free to upgrade.

BTW, I'm running Yosemite on my 2008 Mac Pro 2.88Ghz 8-core and it runs beautifully. I added an SSD as my boot drive and it feels like a brand new Mac! ;-) I would highly recommend added an SSD drive if you can. The difference in performance is quite remarkable.

Thanks so much John, really appreciate you getting back to me on this. Very glad to hear its working well on your machine also. I will wait until I have. A break in jobs prior to up upgrading, and of course back up prior.

I was just going to instal it right over the top of the existing OS and then just see what stopped working and go from there. What are your thoughts on this approach?

Cheers
Steve

That's a fine approach and one that I've done quite often with upgrades. Usually it doesn't introduce any problem of it's own and saves you from having to re-install all of your software. While I've never tried to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Yosemite, it is an approved upgrade according to Apple so it should work. Good Luck!
