2008 Mac Pro keeps restarting (crashing?)
on Jul 6, 2014 at 1:15:06 pm

Recently my computer has begun acting strange. Without warning the computer will simply restart. Perhaps the computer is crashing? I figured the system drive was the problem, so I replaced that last night, but just this morning my computer restarted again out of nowhere?

My computer was running fine for as long as I can remember. I haven't changed any software/plug-ins/drivers/etc, so I'm not sure why it started doing this a few weeks ago. I also don't suspect the issue is software/plug-ins/drivers since my computer has crashed with both a fully set-up system drive and a freshly OS-installed system drive.

What is going on???

Computer specs:

2008 Mac Pro 2.8GHz 8-core

Mac OS X Mnt Lion

4TB HD space

16GB RAM

2 Quadro 4000 GPUs

G-Tech eSATA card

BMD mini monitor card

You say it's restarting. When? When you boot? Or after you have booted and everything seems to be running fine? Randomly or can you do something to cause it to happen?

You can use Console to see what may have been running when it crashed. However, crashes like this tend to be hardware oriented.

You can startup in various modes to test your system. Here's the key combinations.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1533
Try both holding down Shift first.

IF you are not near a repair center, you might want to start by removing your non essential hardware, one piece at a time until you have found the one that seems to be linked to the failure.

You also mention you haven't upgraded your OS, and it's crashing regardless of new install or not. That would seem to point to a hardware failure, but Apple will likely insist on you taking out your third party cards to eliminate them as a root cause. If it was an Apple hardware issue I think you would get a specific error message from the computer.

Hope this helps.

Al

[Al Bergstein] "You say it's restarting. When? When you boot? Or after you have booted and everything seems to be running fine? Randomly or can you do something to cause it to happen?"

It appears to be completely random. It will restart if I'm working in Premiere, cruising the internet, working in Excel, even if the computer is simply on and I'm not doing anything (sometimes I hear it restart from the other room). Sometimes after it reboots, it immediately reboots for a second or third time.

If there's a pattern that causing the restarts, I'm unable to see it.

I will try the various Start Up modes, although, I'd be very surprised if it were a hardware issue. I mean, it makes sense, but I've had this computer hardware set up this way for so long and haven't had any prior issues.

Thanks for responding.

Undertstood. However, as a machine that's now 6 years old it is at the age where failure rates go way up. Statistically, failure rates on electronics have been shown to go up quite dramatically over 5 years of age. I think it has to do with heat related failure, etc. The fact that you say you haven't upgraded any software lately seems and that you actually have reinstalled the OS and it still happens, tends to point to it. I had a 2008 Mac Pro and it did experience hardware failure, in that it's memory cards started failing and I had to replace them.

Apple will likely ask you to take all the third party cards out, and run diagnostics overnight. If the machine fails the diags then you know it's the motherboard or other component, and at that point, it's likely time to replace the machine. However, it could be that one of your third party cards is failing and bringing down the machine with it. The graphics card or RAID card are the possible suspects there.

good luck

ps:
This article documents failure rates in the 2006 era, which shows pretty significant (10%) failure rates after 4 years of age. If this computer is critical to your making a living, I'd start budgeting for a new machine in the next year.

I've had a few instances of problems caused by a dead or nearly-dead Logic board battery. Done a PRAM zap?

I haven't. I don't know what that is, but I'll Google it and give it a shot.

Hmm, yeah it could be that you need to replace the battery.

Bad or failing RAM will often cause restart or shutdown problems. Run the Apple Hardware Test, and run the extended RAM test:

I am having the identical problem.
My computer has suddenly and repeatedly restarted itself without warning while I was using it. It's as if the power was flipped off for a fraction of a second. I checked the power cables, of course, and they're fine. My house has good electrical and no other appliance has behaved like this.

My issue has been resolved and turned out to be bad RAM. So maybe you need some new RAM, too?

Hello,
I have searched for a few days on this problem. My 2008 Mac Pro 8 core is crashing with no reboot. The screen goes blank then the cooling fans race. Extremely random, yet seems more frequent lately.

I might have it narrowed to the RAM also.
OS v.10.10.5
2 x 2.8 quad core Intel Xeon
Nvidia Quadro FX 5600

Internals were very dusty, removed most hardware (esp. disks so no risk of driving dust INTO them) using about 20 psi blew out the case`
Tried the temp monitor/fan speed apps with no luck
Switched graphics drivers to default OS
Checked the Nvidia fan (ok)
Repaired permissions on the OS drive
After a crash have unplugged/replaced the power cord
I have been switching the ram modules ( I have several ) around according to mfr. requirements

I had 1 crash at startup this AM so replaced 1 RAM stick. It's running now. we shall see.

Kevin

One item that missed my attention;
I have an Apple Cinema 23" display with USB/Firewire ports plugged into the Mac Pro. I forget how long ago, but I had a sudden freeze that was possibly the first crash I ever had with this machine. I thought the whole box was toast, but discovered disconnecting the USB/Firewire solved the problem.
Time went by and I reconnected the ports for some reason.
Last evening I remembered the incident and unplugged the ports again leaving only the DVI connected. No crash all night long. I hope I have solved this for MY hardware config at least.

Next on the list; MY physical memory needs replacing.... maybe I need more fish oil. :D

Kevin
