Upgrade from 10.6 to Mountain Lion - clean install necessary?
on Aug 21, 2013 at 6:19:07 pm

Hi guys

I finally need to bite the bullet and upgrade to 10.8 - traditionally I have always done clean install as I always this was best - to avoid headaches later.

- is this still necessary or can I just install over 10.6?

Thanks

Elin

PS Im principally using my mac for adobe suite and a bit of C4d.

It's all the those pesky details :p

this is my advice to you.
Spend $75 and buy a new 1TB internal SATA drive for your Mac Pro.
Install OS X 10.6.8 on a new clean drive, and then run the the OS X 10.8 installer from the APP store. (there is no 10.8 DVD). Now you have your old drive "just in case", and a nice new drive. But don't copy over your applications - you must REINSTALL your applications. You can just drag over your data from your old drive (project files, etc.) but you must reinstall Adobe and C4D.

thanks bob - as i suspected

- ive read a lot of "oh what complete a waste of time" comments recently that made me feel like a dinosaur :(

One more thing - ive heard a lot of complaints about ML running more sluggishly than SL (my current) - can anyone shed light on this?

os x 10.8.4 is great.
And you know what, even a new, fresh install of OS X 10.6.8 on your computer will make it appear to run faster

Just to put it out there, but we're pretty close to Maverick's release. I've been using the beta for a few months now and am really excited about upgrading to it. If you can hold off till 9/10 and see if Apple announces the launch date, it might save you the hassle of doing this all over again in a few months.

Granted, 10.9.1 might be the best upgrade to take when it's released, but we jumped into Mountain Lion 10.8.0 last year and didn't have any negative results from that.
