Is there a way to trash prefs for the Apple Mail app?
on Dec 30, 2011 at 10:23:13 pm

Mail is behaving as though it's possessed, at least my main mailbox is doing so, intermittently, with my outgoing and incoming mail servers going on and offline almost constantly.

So, anyone know if there are indeed prefs to trash, or is there a some terrific freeware app designed to exorcise Apple Mail of demonic possession?

TIA,
David

Are you iMAP or Pop? I'm assuming you have your own dedicated server for your site? Last week I ran into holy heck with my father-in-laws gmail in Apple Mail. Turns out he had a ridiculous number of emails with attachments that needed to download. Once I left it up for a few hours / overnight, it started working smoothly again.

What I mean by your own server is a service like hostgator or go daddy, not an actual server :). It's could be an issue with your host, or perhaps your ISP is blocking a port that needs to be changed.

Bingo! I am with GoDaddy and calling them was precisely what my next step was going to be. Thanks for confirming that idea John...

Meanwhile, have a terrific holiday and I'll see you on the other side in 2012.

Like John said, the mailbox going on and offline a lot is probably some kind of network issue or problem with the server (service) you are using.

If you really want to "trash prefs", you can. You need to get two different places (where ~ is your home directory, typically /Users/[username]):
~/Library/Prefrences/com.apple.mail.plist
~/Library/Mail/
This will also nuke any mail you have stored locally and indexes and cached mail for remotely stored (IMAP, Exchange) accounts.

Though "trashing prefs" seems to be something that makes Final Cut less grumpy at times, I've not run into a case where that is really needed or useful for Mail or any thing else (maybe I've just been lucky).

If you have other questions or want to be more precise about what gets trashed, let me know and i can help dig those details out.
