System 10.4.11 re-install
on May 1, 2011 at 12:03:38 am

Hello,
I am running a Mac Mini 1.25ghz G4 with os 10.4.11.
Obviously the unit is old and has gotten quite sluggish. I would like to re-install the os however I CANNOT find the original os disc(s).
What is my best course of action? Is there a disc or download available that contains 10.4 with all updates inclusive? Is this still the best os for me to be running on this machine?
Thanks, in advance, for your help.
Leigh

I had an old g4 1gig dual die on me a couple weeks ago. To replace it I obtained my Dad's old mac mini, just like yours.

When I got it, it was loaded with crap shareware "helpers" that really slowed the thing down. I tried to find all of these in the operating system and delete them. But in the end, the computer seemed still too slow.

So I dug out an old copy of system 10.4 disks (that I had purchased to upgrade from system 9) and re-formated the hard disk and installed the new system. I checked software update and there was a combo update that brought everything as up to date as I could (within osx10.4).

And the final result is.....it's still really slow! I mean it's barely ok for internet surfing.

I think the problem the 512mb of memory in the mini. It's just not enough for system 10.

I do have an old macbook g4 that's dead. Will the memory from this work in the Mini? Is it worth the effort to pull apart the mini to put it in?

Finding old Apple OS's is hard. It almost seems like Apple incinerates every last unsold copy when they bring out a new one. You could go to eBay and Craigslist to find it, but I've seen Tiger going for around 150$, which is the same price as a new SL box set. I'd be doing the rounds of my geek friends to find someone who has that installer. I'm sure there are darker corners of the internetz where people would give you another response. Once you track down the installer, the link Alex posted will bring you up to 10.4.11.

That little computer will always be sluggish. It was underpowered when it was released, so it's normal that it's choking six years later. Running Tiger on it is probably what I'd do. Leopard was clearly designed with Intel-equipped computers in mind with more eye-candy and background tasks and it would be dreadful on a single G4 CPU.

Hello and Thank You for all of your responses.
It turns out that Apple Care will send any missing start-up discs to the registered owner of any Mac for $16 per disc including shipping. Mine are in the mail.
Thanks again!
