Is this correct RAM for new 12core Mac Pro?
on Sep 10, 2010 at 1:57:33 am

Hi All-
May be ahead of the curve here but bought a 12core w 8MB RAM and want to add another 16.
based on Mac specs THIS (off Amazon) is what I am considering:

Crucial CT2KIT51264BC1067 8GB 204-PIN PC3-8500 SODIMM DDR3 (4GBx2)

looks closest, but a few extra descriptors in name make me 2nd guess this is correct RAM?

Qs to Crucial go unanswered :(

Suspect this is something a LOT of us will be looking at shortly....

Why not just download crucials system test and have it tell you what kind of ram your machine will take?

I put in 64 gigs in a 12 core last week. Check out owc and it's pretty self explanatory.

Hi John-
Thanks - I did find OWC and bought ram, so its all good.
Man, 64 gigs?? That should power the space station! Didn't even think a Mac could ingest that much.

Here's a question - 12 Core freezes?
on Sep 12, 2010 at 10:31:00 pm

It can do 64, but only in 64 bit kernel - which all the new macs default at now. I only like to upgrade my main work station every 2 years - and then I pretty much don't touch it after that. I went a little crazy in hopes that more 64 bit apps come out soon that can take advantage of all that RAM (Final Cut Studio 4, etc.).

I have a question - do you have your 12 core yet? Did you get the 5870 graphics card? Have you had any weird freezes with bizarre horizontal lines across the screen? I've frozen about 4 or 5 times now with these weird horizontal lines. It's pretty annoying and not associated with particular programs. I read that the 5870 on PC had problems with vertical line freezes when it overheats. This may be the price we pay for 'bleeding edge' workstations....

Hi John-
no - haven't received mine yet - BUT I did order the 5870... thats the upgraded card, right?
Jeez. This I didn't want to here. Apple giving any help with this??
Yah - bleeding edge indeed.

Hope you'll keep us updated on this !!
cheers

I'm hoping it's going to be fixed in an update. Could be I got a bad card. Or even I have a conflict with a periph. It's a pretty heavily loaded system. There are lots of tngs it could be. I'm sure you'll be fine. It is really fast!

I recently purchased a new rig. Here are the specs.

2 X 2.93Ghz 6 Core/16GB RAM/ ATI Radeon 5870 video card.

I am having very odd mouse lag problems that are quite annoying. I am also having issues with playing sequences in unlimited RT. A guy in our office can play back better with a quad core. In regards to the mouse problem I have tried several different mouse and keyboard issues including a Wacom tablet and I get the same poor results.

Some people say it could be my video card and some say it could be a dirty power issue. I took the rig back to the store and the tech geek in the back said it worked fine for him but when I showed up with the keyboard and mouse to test it he had boxed up the computer and gone home.

Here is a clip of the screen and the weird jumpy jittery problem I am having.

You can see the mouse and the window I am dragging freeze for a second even though I am mousing smoothly and continuously. The mouse and keyboard and Wacom tablet work perfectly on my old Dual Core.

I was also getting system freezes when trying to wake my Mac up but a fresh install of the OS fixed it.

Hey Paul-
been having my own issues, but all/most related to trying to use FCS2 (I hope an upgrade to FCS 3 will help??)
None of the funkiness you describe tho!!
As Bill C would say:
"ah feel your pain"
-just in a different spot!

Your prob maybe bad ram? pull some sticks and see if it helps?

maybe being on the bleeding-12core-edge is not so smart??

Are any of you operating in 64 bit kernal? All the new mac pros default to the 64bit kernal now, not the 32. You have to google how to change mac pro 2010 to 32bit kernal. It requires cutting and pasting something into your terminal command line, but you'll be stoked when it's done.

Stoked, not stroked. Stroking won't come until OSX 10.7.
