Yes my problem was that the drive I was sold was not for mac format and so therefore could not be formatted in anything other than FAT 32.
I have since bought a WD my book 1tb esata, this is specifically for mac and comes formatted mac os journaled.
However to get it working properly I have had to partition it (one partition) and via the options button formatted it in the GUID format which is for intel based Macs. This seems to have sorted out the problems I've been having.
I also needed to update the drivers for my Lacie PCI esata card.
