Can I record my desktop to an external video camera?
on Jul 1, 2008 at 12:32:23 am

Here's kind of an odd question. Is there any way to capture an hour of myself surfing the web onto an external video camera? I would normally use Snapz but I need to record something for much longer and I know Snapz has trouble capturing more than a few minutes.

Are there any special outputs or adapters i can buy for my Mac so i can hook up my camera and record whatever is on my screen? I'm working on a Mac Pro tower.

Thanks for the help!
Emily

Look into ScreenFlow or iShowU they are both MUCH better then Snapps.

There are no "technical solutions" to your "artistic problems".
Don't let technology get in the way of your creativity!

Besides software to capture your screen to a file, there are hardware solutions as well. VGA to Video converters are available from many manufacturers, such as Scan Do, BlackBox, Focus Enhancements, AverMedia and others. Video quality generally is proportional to price. Check online suppliers like B&H, Markertek, etc. I do know some people who have gotten quite usable results shooting an LCD monitor with their camera, carefully framed and on a very stable mount, shielded from extraneous light.
