networking question - mac/pc, specific folder
on Jan 5, 2007 at 7:17:05 pm

i'm just setting up a small network with a final cut pro system at the
heart. there is also a simple pc from which i'd like to feed some files
to the mac. i have successfully gotten them to see each other so far but
would like help in getting a more specific configuration.

as things are now, when i log into the mac from the pc i see my user
account's home folder. what i would like to have happen is that the pc
only see a specific folder on the mac (osx 10.4.8) rather than the entire
home folder. the folder i want to have the pc see is not on the main mac
system drive where the home folder resides, it is on an external sata raid
box.

on windows i can select specific folders and assign them to share or not
and each of these folders then shows up in the windows network neighborhood
as an icon. i'd like to do something like this with a mac folder.

the reason for this is that the pc is being used for a single purpose,
generating still photo images which the mac will use. i want to save
them from the pc directly to a specific folder and not have the pc user
ever see anything else of the mac.

any clues or links to how i can do this are much apreciated,
BabaG

hello...

i gotta run out the door right now, but a first step would be to check to see if you've searched the archives of this forum for this topic - we get it quite frequently, and i recall a specific question that i answered at one point that was pretty much exactly what you want to do here...

give it a shot if you haven't already and let us know if you can't find what you're looking for!

whenever i search i get much more generalized topics. any
tips on how to narrow it to the issue of the specific folder
share?

hello...

well - you can in unix (and therefore os x) change the home directory of a user to whatever folder you want, but in this case, if you have a user for the pc login, you are safe if they are not an admin user - then you can use the symbolic link tool in unix to make a shortcut in the home dir that the pc can use:

if you really want to lock them down and change their home dir to that specific folder, then you'd need to be somewhat unix-sys-ad friendly as i don't think there is a gui tool on os x to do that - but if you want to know about that, i can poke around and see if there are steps, or again give this forum's archives a search as i think we covered that at one point as well...but maybe not - can't recall off of the top of my head...
