G4 / Trash problem
on Dec 3, 2005 at 6:40:40 pm

We have an old G4 833 that is currently running as an off-line DV editing suite. We are in the process of updating this computer to run 5.0 so we can transfer files from one edit suite to another. I am trying to back-up and erase files that are on the internal HD and have incurred a huge problem. I cannot drag any files into the trash, it gives me a message "cannot be moved to trash because it cannot be deleted". The whole drive is locked...I checked everything, ran Norton, Disk Warrior, nothing works.

I would start by simply repairing your permissions. You didn't tell us what OS you're using, but these links should give you a solution:

Sometimes, its easier to just do an "Archive and Install" from the OS X installer disks. If the quick fixes don't work or there are still other problems I would consider it. Be sure to choose the option to save your applications and home folder files (I don't remember the wording). You could also try starting up off a different drive.

P.S. Don't use Norton - ever. It used to be good, but that was along time ago.
