La Cie drive problem
on Apr 13, 2005 at 3:32:59 pm

I have a 500 gig La Cie drive connected to a G5 with a firewire 800 cable. On the drive are 8 folders with between 30,000-60,000 Jpegs in each one. When I try to open the folders, nothing shows up, in any view. The computer does not seem to be thinking, it just reads the folders as empty. The files did show up, until I tried to copy one of the folders to another firewire drive. This crashed the computer. Ever since then, I have not been able to get into the folders. Any suggestions????

hmmm - maybe you could try using fw 400 connection? My lacie 250 has both I assume the 500 does also? Do the folder sizes read as 0 if you go iew > show all sizes? If not maybe try copying a folder to an internal drive. Try sherlock - does it find the missing files?

Katherine,

I'm assuming that when you bought your drive that you reformatted it in Mac OS Extended (aka HFS+) before you started using it. The next step is to find out if your problem may be a corrupt directory on the LaCie drive. If you don't have a copy of DiskWarrior you should choose to buy it and run the program. It will tell you the state of the directory and will build a completely new one if required, instead of trying to fix the existing one like lesser utility programs will try to do.

Thanks for your response.
La Cie tech support said the same thing about Disk Warrior.
The drive is PC/Windows formatted. Disk Warrior doesn't see the drive as being mounted on the desktop, even though it looks as if it is.
Any other suggestions?

If you knowingly formatted your LaCie in FAT32 binary (Mac/PC formatting) then it should be usable on a windows machine as well as the Mac. Got any friends with a windows machine you can impose upon? I have no experience with a FAT32 formatted drive hooked up to a Mac, so I'm out of ideas with regard to this. Someone else will have to jump in here and help out.

Um, you could always try Apple's own disc utility and see if it can recognize the files contained on your FW drive. After all, it's able to format drives in FAT32 as well as the Mac native formatting as far as I know. You'll find the program in the Applications folder/Utilies/Disk Utility. It might be worth a shot.

Hi,

I had a Lacie FW 500 drive die on me last week. I was able to get the data off of it using "Data Rescue" but afterward nothing could convice OS-X to see the drive. (It's now off for repairs)

It seems to have been a problem that had been developing over time. I got occasional errors and had to eject or forcibly shut down to get the drive to behave. Finally it just died.

Either Disk Warrior or Data Rescue should at least help you retrieve the data and hopefully you can then reformat or repair the drive afterward.

Good luck,

Lars

You could also try using the terminal to see if the files are being seen by the system at all or if it is just a Finder issue. If you need help using the terminal, let me know and I'll give you the commands you need to try.
