Font Problem Please Help!
on Apr 13, 2005 at 12:29:27 am

Thanks in advance, if anyone can figure this one out. I have some fonts that I received for a project I will be working on later this week. They are all postscript type 1. I cannot get Fontbook to install them. When I try they are grayed out so I cannot select them. When I drag them into the font folder, they do not show up in fontbook or other applications.

The os does recognize them as fonts, well the files have the font icons. I have tried to load them on two computers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am running current versions of os X (10.3.8).

Here is what I could find on Mac OS X... unfortunately, it looks like they've moved all 10.3.x info to support! 10.4 isn't even shipping yet!!!!

One other thing to check, if you got them in an email as an attatchment, check their file permissions...

Fontbook doesn't recognize PostScript fonts directly. It sees them only via a suitcase (screenfont) file.

To install them, double-click on the suitecase file or drag it onto the FontBook icon.

OSX will generally not let you see the screen fonts stored in the suitcase file but uses the linked PostScript fonts for screen display instead. However, all the style, metrics and kerning information is stored in the suitcase file. PostScript font files by themselves cannot be installed and nothing will happen if you try to open them in FontBook.

Font suitcases no longer have an icon that looks like a suitcase. Instead, look for the letters FFIL on the icon. "Font Suitcase" will also be shown as "Kind" in the Finder.

Oops.... the rest:

PostScript font files have the letters LWFN on their icons and are listed as "PostScript Type 1 Outline Font" under "Kind" in the Finder.

Thank you all for your help. I had contacted my client and explained the problem. Then sent me some new files, and some of them worked, but others didn't. I got what I needed though. I am not exactly sure what the difference is, but it is working so I am not going to complain. Once again thank you all.
