Motion Vectors and lm2DMV_v2 shader
on Jul 26, 2007 at 12:21:36 am

Anyone had success with getting the lm2DMV_v2 shader to work properly with Maya OSX?

I've followed all the steps outlined from here:
http://www.impresszio.hu/szabolcs/MentalRay/lm_2dmvMayaFiles.htm

I've added the following lines of code to the very end of the maya.rayrc file (as instructed from the link above) so that it reads something like this:

end registry

$lookup "{MRMAYA_START}"

link "{MAYABASE}/lib/lm2DMV_v2.{DSO}"
mi "{MAYABASE}/include/lm2DMV_v2.mi"

Additionally, I've installed the following files into the relevant directories in Maya's "package contents":

mayacontentsmentalrayincludelm2DMV_v2.mi
mayacontentsmentalrayliblm2DMV_v2.dll (using the XSI dll file . . . no maya dll file available)
mayacontentsscriptsAElm2DMV_v2Template.mel

I've disregarded the "render_lm2DMV_v2.xpm" file, as I have no idea where to place this one.

Everything seems good to go, and "pass custom alpha" option is set in render globals . . .

I have a simple scene with a sphere moving with the lm2DMV_v2 shader assigned. Only two keyframes, and trying to render out the middle of the sequence, but get the following error:

// Warning: (Mayatomr.Custom) : /Applications/Autodesk/maya8.5/Maya.app/Contents/mentalray/include/lm2DMV_v2.mi: no shader library specified nor found in search path, expect manual loading //

Any ideas?

I presume you need the mac version of the shader
Check the maya section here:

Downloaded and installed the osx .so file, but get the following error:

// Warning: (Mayatomr.Custom) : /Applications/Autodesk/maya8.5/Maya.app/Contents/mentalray/include/lm2DMV_v2.mi: couldn't find shader library //

Any chance of posting exactly what all of the contents of the maya.rayrc file should read, top to bottom? I think I might have something out of order . . .

I will ask around, not a Maya Mac expert here

I see on CGTALK
Looks like someone needs to make a MacIntel compile of the shader

Ahhh, that would make sense . . .

Any other suggestions for producing motion vectors out of Maya OSX running mactel?

Some ideas for today:

Can you render in rosetta mode for now?

I know Illuminate Labs and AIR (The renderman clone) have it built-in
Someone told me V-Ray too but I never tried
I think AIR runs only on Win/Lin though (the point is it's possible to write a 3 lines renderman shader for that if there is one available on the Mac).

In case, we never know what one has around. You can also save an FBX out of Maya and load it in Cinema4D and render just that (their built-in motion vectors pass).

The MV shader source code is available for recompile and hosting that version.

Gave up trying to find solutions. Found the best approximation was to render a flat lambert shaded scene with default lighting. I figure, RSMB will have the easist time working with this "motion pass," rather than my RGB/beauty passes . . .

We added some notes about a yet unsupported possible solution for maya mac users (the indented text in the maya section)

revisionfx.com
select FAQS on top
last item of General FAQs
Open the Maya accordeon, check for the indented text :)
