Trapcode Particular Cloud

Hi guys,

Hope you are keeping well.

I'm wonder if you have any ideas if trapcode particular would have the capabilities to create a cloud like this image?

Cheers

Those hard edges and selfshadowing, unlikely. Also, really depends of what camera/cloud motion you are after. Google "trapcode clouds" for starters, explore image links to tuts. Best luck.

The closest you could get is something like this.

But its a bit of a cheat because its using a sprite with a prerendered movie of cloud puffs from a 3D particles system. I mean it can be better than waiting for your volumetrics to render in true 3D and you could render a few base movies. The sprites will shadow each other but they are just flat so there is no volumetric self shadowing going on (except where there was in the original 3D system).
Issues with this method include:
rotation - if you rotate the sprite in Z the shadowing in the original movie will not be oriented correctly.
Similarity - you will start to see the same shapes again and again.
Lifespan - its tough to get a prerendered element to behave like a cloud would as it ages. If its just clouds scudding along that change shape slowly then this will work.

The cloudlet in Particular is really just a sphere shaded a special way and blends a special way with the sphere behind it. When they all gang together you get a sort of blurry out of focus smokey cloud but not like what you have pictured. I've actually had better luck getting "volume" with a cluster of shaded spheres. But the illusion can fall apart pretty quickly.

This is my attempt. The logic is to use 100 original unmoving particles inside a flat sphere emitter as origination points with loads of aux particles emitted from those points. Cloudlet used as aux particle, original particles invisible.

Even funkier approach: 100 light emitters and main particles as feathered spheres.

For performance reasons you would be better off using prerendered "puff" particles like Steve demonstrated.

Essentially you could do the whole thing in Particular: You could prerender a bunch (5-10) of individual round puffs in Particular, make a video clip with the particles and then use that as a sprite with random still frame.
