MIR or Form or....

Looking for the best method using MIR, FORM, AE only, to make a 3D moving terrain based on actual altitude or GPS/altitude coordinates. A wireframe model would work. Shaded would work as well but I'm not looking for lots of detail here. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I think your best bet, if you're looking for actual terrain, is to use a 3D program to import a DEM file (you can get these free from the USGS site. I believe Blender (a freebie) will import elevation maps. Then export it as a .obj file, in which case MIR, or Form will do the job. There may be other ways to get your elevation map to an obj, but these are the ones I know. I use 3DS Max to do the first step.

Hey thanks Joe!
We don't have any real 3D programs here at work and my personal copy of Maya is to too old to update or even work on my current home OS. I do like your solution tho and will press for the purchase of a program as this could be something we'll be doing a lot of. I'll take a look at Blender. Thanks again!

So for the time being, Blender will import the DEM and then export the obj. file?

Hi Darrell -

Although Blender doesn't have native DEM import capability, here's a plugin that gives it DEM import:

Here's some more info on the process:

Hi Sir!

I have a problem with trapcode Mir, the first time i used it, a pop-up appears:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Assertion Failed!
File:....Compcodegenerator.cpp
Line 1972

...at the end of the message:
(please retry to debug the application"

My Laptop's spec:

Windows 7 Home Premium
Intel core i3
Intel
graphic card: Intel Graphic Media Accelerator HD 1GB
RAM: 4GB

What is the problem and how can i fix it?

thanks so much :)
