Particular: Life and death...

I am struggling with the particular plugin. All I want to do is have a constant amount of particles - none of them popping up/dying. I've tried initially cranking up the birth rate to 200 then dropping it to 0 on the next frame, with the life set to 1000. Doesn't work. I am without a clue? Can anyone help? I realise I could duplicate each individual custom particle and place them where I want but time is of the essence...

Go into the "Options.." (at the top) and set the preroll to 100. This will start generating particles as if they have been emitting for 100% of the length of the comp prior to frame 0.

Then, make the life to TWICE then length of the composition (the earliest possible particle would be born 100% before frame 0 and live 100% beyond frame 0.. therefore it's 200% of the comp length).

You can make a simple expression to due this for the life which is:

thisComp.duration * 2

That should get you going in the right direction.

Also, the newly released "Form" is exactly about that: having a body of particles that are always "alive" rather than having life/death. You might want to check it out.
