Layer exploder/particular

Im doing a comp in which I want far off buildings to crumble and fall. I think this could be done without 3d using something like the layer exploder in particle playground. The problem is....it is entirely too slow to test with. Is it possible to use particular to make video or still elements turn to particles/dust and use the rgb info of the original element for color? I have a way to do this in fusion, but I am comping in AE, and dont want to have to use another Ap for this
Pleez help!!!!

Try using Layer Emitters, 3D layers that can emit particles. See more in the built-in help. An yes, particles can pick up the color from the layer emitter.
