Maybe I'm stupid, but the smoketype plugin just makes the word "type."

How do I make it say the word I want?

Thanks in advance,

well i hate to bear bad news, but smoke type isn't tracing text. Its tracing a path.
Specifically... This path:
Free Image Hosting at <a rel='nofollow' href='http://www.ImageShack.us'>http://www.ImageShack.us</a>

The particle emission was animated as well. This effect was more manual then you expected eh? Here this is how i will go about this

I have two animated GIF's, the first one is the process, the second is the result
note that how you do this is up to you, this is Q(ue)JETS method.
Step 1: bezier path your name.
Step 2: go into the mask and click on the shape property to select hit, hit CTR+C to copy the path data to the clipboard, now go to the particle emitter and select the emitter position property, hit CTR+V to past the path data to animate the position of the emitter across time (speed it up or slow it down as necessary, and divide the roving key frames up also to get the look your looking for.
Step 3: preview your path, tweak your particles.
Step 4: now using hold keyframes, animate the particle emission rate so that you have blank spots in some areas

Pretty cool stuff huh?

QueJet, copy and paste the path was not possible in AFX 7, was it?

Oh, and thanks for the tutorial, I liked it!

copy/paste mask to motion path works in AE7, just follow QueJet's steps exactly.

I'd like to add another option, this is how the path for SmokeType was originally created:
I used the Motion Sketch (Window>Motion Sketch, read in built-in help) feature to set Position of a (dummy) solid. Then copied the Position property keyframes into Particular's Emitter>Position XY.
