How is this done - 3d stroke?
on Jul 24, 2006 at 1:37:27 pm

Hi All,

This is the effect I need to recreate:

http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/gallery/domanistudios/index.html - the black flowing line in the top swf animation. Is 3d stroke what I need and is it possible to create my own flowing line in illustrator and paste it in AE and add 3d stroke? Or can I only use AE's pen tool to create a stroke?

Any thoughts on how this is done would be great

Thx

Rob

Most likely the line was created in Freehand and animated using Tweens in Flash. This rules out any involvement of 3DStroke or AE for that matter. You could create something similar in AE I suppose. Your best chance of doing that is to use Particular. 3DStroke is out of the question, I'd say, since it neither allows multiple overlap loops nor has it any built-in obscuration. Masking each element manually would be a major pain.
