custom particles facing camera
on Jan 10, 2006 at 3:55:17 am

hi

Is there anyway to have custom particles not face the camera ???
I have been playing with some 3D pre-comps as custom particles but they always face the camera which looks kind of weird when the camera starts to move.
how was the birds/bats/butterflies demo done on the trapcode site ?

thanks, daniel

Like normal nested 3D comps you can use the collapse transformation switch to maintain 3D properties on particles. The shading will still be sampled with the initial orientation, though, so it's not always the perfect solution. It's also a major render hog.

yeah, I tried collapsing but the particles still maintain a uniform orientation towards the camera no matter how much the camera moves around them... the birds/bats etc seem to have their own orientation untied to the camera, or is there some trick to make it appear like they do ?

collapsing transformations on the custom particle layer is not recommended, it is very slow and it does not produce a correct output.

it's easy enough to download the birds/bats project file and see how it was done. the particles are simply rotated in 3d inside the precomp and collapse is off. this means you cannot move the camera very much in the shot or it will look strange, but with the camera static like in the bbb clip it works perfectly.
