Random Loop Custom Particle - not looping
on Dec 16, 2005 at 7:01:24 pm

I have an animation set up in several particular layers.
It will eventually be typography as snow.
Each letter is a custom 3 second particle .
seen here -
it is a solid 3 second loop (yes my version has an alpha channel)

Problem is the "p" is popping out of existence at the end of it's loop and not looping.
here is the mov of just the "p" particle -
I've checked and rechecked my settings to make sure..

1)It is on Random Loop
2)Opacity doesn't change over life
3)the clipping planes are set to maximum
4)there is not obstruction layers
5)and LIFE is high - double the comp length

the only keyed element is birth rate - which steadily increases

please help! - this project is due tuesday 12.20.05

ATTN: Peder Norby - possible bug found

OK, this is definitally a bug in Particular and it's causing me much grief...

Dual 2ghz G5 MacOSX 10.3.9 8GB RAM
After Effects 6.5

The problem occurs when setting up custom particles to run on a random loop...
Everything is hunky dory until you try and change the layer assigned as the custom particle to a different layer (even if this layer has the same excact attributes as the previous one.)
What happens is the Random start frame still works but the loop function does not. The particle just vanishes when it reaches the end of the clip or precomped custom layer.

Restarting etc. does not help - the only thing to do is to rebuild the effect and not to change it after you have it set up.

It should be noted that in the project I'm working on that I am using about 10 different particular layers.
They each perfrom the basic same task except emit unique custom particles.
The easiest way and most logical way to set up such a task would be to set up one solid particular effect layer the way you want with custom particle etc. and then duplicate it or copy and paste it as much as you need to ... then go back and just change the custom particle layer of each one.

And this works fine, except for Random Loop.

If anyone knows a fix or if Peder has released an update please let me know.

Make sure the custom particle layer starts at the same frame as the particular layer. You may need to zoom in the timeline so you can see they start at exactly the same frame.
