Particular honers the AE camera, but why not the lighting?

Thanks,

Russ

Ahem, what do you mean? Cloudlets/ Smokelets will use one light of your scene. Other than that, there is little point in your request for the following reasons:

a) Particular does not use true 3D particles, so there is no way to properly calculate light incidence

b) Assuming you use nested comps for creating things such as the birds or flying cubes from the Trapcode site, the shading is always sampled based on the initial orientation. This is something that would offer a chance to change it in a future release, but at the moment it's this way.

c) AE's lights do not have any falloff so they are always illuminating the entire scene. Things such as particles being blue inside the falloff area of a blue light and then becoming red when entering a red light cannot be done this way.

d) Spotlights would allow some of the effects described in c) even without falloffs, but it's not yet implemented.

e) Since as per a) the particles have no real dimension, they cannot properly cast and receive shadows. It would be possible to make them darker when they enter shadowed areas using other methods, but again, it's not implemented yet.

Thanks for that info. I was not expecting to see any kind of complex lighting based on the particles geometry or position. Just thought it might be nice to allow the layer itself to take on some lighting.
AE is far from a true 3D package, but anything helps.

Yepp, I have the same feeling (come from a 3D background as well). AE's entire 3D approach needs reconsifderation, especially these days where even games do realtime bumbmapping and reflections and often in much better quality than the simplest 3D layer in AE.
