3d Stroke help
on May 10, 2005 at 3:32:56 am

I would like to have a 3d line zig zag through a line of text, which could go over, under, and through the letters. Not just a simple pattern laid on top of the text, but actually be able to manipulate it as I see fit. Thanks for any help.

This is tricky but you can segment the 3D Stroke rendering into two layers and use the Z clip. Look at the "bend.mov" example AE project file:

Thanks Peder,

But I think that I'm looking for more of an effect like in the "Nailgun - Adidas" ad in the gallery, where the line goes farther then nearer, and zig zag between the break dancers. I know that they are different layers at different distances, but the line also dodges around them a bit. Is there a way to manipulate the mask so that the points on the line are farther and nearer, or would I have to bend the line so that it is just right.

You cannot set a Z coordinate for a mask vertex, the mask is always in a plane.

Using different values for rotation and bend on different layers is probably what you need.

Are you trying to accomplish something like this?:

(8.5 mb file)

The only way I could see to it easily (if not quickly) was to add several animated masks to my 3DStroke Layers. I basically roto'd the items the onjects the lines needed to go "behind".

There may be a less time consuming way, but I figured that rather than burn time trying to figure out what that was, it was easier to go with something I knew would work.

That link should work better
