Syncing events (from MIDI)

Relative newbie here. I'm interested in doing something along the lines of the old MIDI-driven Animusic videos, which are now pretty old but never seem to have been bettered.

They were originally created using 3DS and a custom pipeline from MIDI.

I was surprised by the lack of current MIDI support in Maya. All I've come across is the elusive "Mayasound" plugin which has its own website but doesn't seem to be available anywhere...

...and the "MIDI Tools for Maya" which last worked in v8.5...

I've found a possible pipeline via MIDI plugins for Blender or C4D, from which you could then export an FBX, and I've learned about "driven keys" to reapply that to animated geometry in Maya. But I don't yet understand event timing; how you could fire a stream of Animusic-style bouncing balls in sync with a MIDI file, for instance. I just came across "scriptJob"...is that where I should be looking, or am I missing something...? Just a quick reality check really. 😉

(Houdini is probably the best tool for this kind of thing ultimately, but beyond me at the moment.)
