I am still very new to Maya, and especially the realm of UV mapping. I know that there are ways to somehow connect it with Photoshop, ZBrush, and about a hundred other options. For this specific project I am working on, I have a canyon that I made by making a curve in the "shape" of the canyon, and then a path that it extruded itself upon, giving me a NURBS surface. I am in the process of trying to convert the NURBS to polys with the convert command (though I am getting weird bumps with that, even when using quads and a specific count), but after I finish that process, how would I begin to get a "canyon" like look to it? Right now, it's just a blank grey expanse. Thanks in advance!
Topology mapping in Photoshop is what I did back in the day.
Basically painted in PS but you have to take the vertical parts into consideration.
They will stretch out and look pixelated.
The other is procedural and that is probably the best way.
Just need to spend a ton of time making on or to shaders to your liking.
I sure miss the Duncan Brinsmead terra file in PowerAnimator :)
