Create seamless joins on a blocky character rig?

Hi this is my first post, so I apologise for any errors.

I am in the process of rigging a character. It is a stylised character that looks kinda like a minecraft character. For each body part (arms, legs, body ect) I have create joints, made an IK handle and then skinned them to their appropriate body part. and this works great! But the points where the leg/arm meets the body does not look clean at all, because they are separate meshes. Here is a picture of the problem:

I realize that it is not clear exactly what I would like. So here is a picture (The angle is not very good so I apologise)

I thought that the obvious way to fix this, would be to make the arms and body just one mesh. But when I then skin the mesh, moving the arm takes the body with it. So then when I tried using the paint blend weights tool and flooded the body with black, the body disappeared! So I have know I idea how to fix this.

--Thank-you in advance

You have to create that as one polyset.

You have to polysets that dont match at the joint.

Cant expect the IK to make that smooth.
