How would I approach creating a character in maya?
on Jan 23, 2016 at 2:22:57 pm

Hey there. Character creation is something I've never done before and I was given the assignment to create a 3D charecter in Maya 2016 but first we would have to draw out a sketch so it can be imported as a image plane and from there it would be modelled, rigged etc. My only issue is how would I approach this, like should I either draw it out and scan that image or do the anterior view in a drawing application using a graphics tablet because this is something I've literally never done before and I'm still learning Maya, so do you have any suggestions to how I should approach this? Thanks :)

ps: here is the image/charecter I'm planning on making: http://prntscr.com/9tryiw

Depends on your modeling skills and approach.
Im old school so your example I would tackle with NURBS.
However Ive seen some Poly folks here that can make that in minutes.
So first off how is your modelign skills?

Ive always used Cinema 4D for modelling and everything 3D but since im having to learn Maya for my degree, Id say my maya modelling is average. Heres a link to some examples of what i can make in maya:

Looking at your work I cant see how you would have a problem replicating the knowledge to Maya.
Before Maya I cut my teeth in 3DSTUDIO MAX, formZ, EIAS, Animation Master, Softimage and A|W Power Animator/Modeler.
CD4 is an amazing app and you should be able to easily transfer skills to Maya.
