Curve Extrusion Animation Problem ((Pics and Video))
on Mar 27, 2015 at 4:58:55 pm

I watched this tutorial:

But at 2:47 in the video, my results are as pictured. My extruded geometry flies and distorts wildly.

The image to the right is what I am trying to achieve, but animated. So I would extrude a Nurbs Square along the curve, then use the same animation method.

Any help's appreciated.

Let me get this straight.
You want a ribbon like effect?
Is the profile an actual rec flattened to zero?
Can you send the file?

Hi Eric,

I want to build a chart like this

that grows from the base up. I'll try to send the file to you. Thanks!

EDIT: How can I send it to you?

Did you get my message via internal mail?

This tutorial is the best one I found that explains the Extrude animation.
My only beef is that the subCurve values are from zero to 1.
Not much fun keyframing that :P

Hi Eric - Yeah, that's the tutorial I first tried. The extrusion looks trippy like in the screenshots. But thanks for your time and help.

There are so many parameters to check on extrude animations.
First make sure the pivot point for both curves are in the right place.
For profile usually centre and for path at start of path.
Then path has to have a decent amount of CVs.
That usually determines the motion of the extrude.
The file I sent you had to path animations attach.
I only animated the subCurve2 (path curve) for the extrude build.

Eric - Change of plans. No one in my group knows Maya but me, sooooo, I now have to do this in C4D. Bummer. I don't know C4D as well. Time to learn :)

Thanks again for everything.

Hello,

this is a funny one. I have was having a look around on the net for a weird curve extrusion issue I have never had before (fixed now) and came across this thread. Funnily enough the video tutorial here is one of my own i.e I made it.
If anyone would like any extra maya help feel free to email me phil@strangebox.co.uk and I will be happy to help out with any maya issues. I have just started doing live Skype one to one tutorials for anyone that is stuck - it's working out pretty well for those that have tried it and it's kind of unique in that its always completely personalized to the individuals needs.
Anyway feel free to fire away with any curve related issues and for anyone that wants it I have just created a Maya 2013 scene with a whole bunch of pre made animated curves with arrow heads and other bits and peices that follow the curves perfectly.
I also created the kind of effect you were after in the same scene. You (personally) can have this scene for free if you email me directly. Please don't share it around as I will be selling this scene shortly on one of the market places.
The scene has a nice easy way to move various curves around with a simple set up I put together.
it's the least I could do after creating a video which didn't quite help you out.
Phil
