I don't know how I work in this business with such gaps in my knowledge but...


Here i've modelled a plane into a magazine page.

My objective, to remove the faces that are selected - without rounding the corners of the hole.

Here the faces are removed, however, when in smooth shade mode it caves in.

Trying to solve this mess by adding edge loops close to the hole result in some weird bends.

Any tips would change the shape of my design career!

Can I ask why exactly you want to smooth this object? If you use enough resolution (divisions) you should get a nice smooth effect regardless of whether it is smoothed or not. You could also soften the normals if you are getting a hard shaded object.

you need to add more faces/verts to keep it from smoothing.
you can select the inner edge and apply ..... crap Im no where near Maya to answer that one.
