Maya Animation-Deformation of objects

Hello everyone,

I am experiencing a problem when trying to animate a model in Maya. I have created a simple skeleton for the model as shown in the figure.

I have "smooth bound" the skeleton with the model. But now when I apply transformations on the joints of the skeleton, the model deforms awkwardly as seen in the below figures.

The model not only deforms the area the joint is bound to but also the surrounding areas of the body. Please let me know what I am doing wrong. I apologize if it is an obvious mistake. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you for reading.

Regards,
Sonia

Use the Paint Weight selection tool to massage the area that you dont like.

You can also rebind after changing the shoulder joint position.

There are other techniques that work best for this sorry Id have to dig up older tutorials but you can Google that.

What's happening is that the strength of the joint is beyond the part you want to move.

What you want to do is: Open the Paint Skin Weights Tool (Skin > Edit Smooth Skin > Paint Skin Weights Tool >

For each joint you'll have to "paint" the weight onto the figure. White means that the current joint is 'on' for that area.
