Script: Assign textures or another idea ?

Here's my problem, I want to create something like those gifs below, but really bigger!

Step 1 :
An 8 frames looped animation

Step 2 :

http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/335090plans.gif

Explanation :

I create 8 planes and assign 8 lamberts with animated transparency.

In the "Frame offset" option, I put zero, then 1 on the next texture, then 2, 3, etc...
I duplicate the 8 planes several times to obtain this big tower, which I move under a large black plane to hide it. I keyframe Y position, move on the timeline by as many frames as there are planes in the tower, and then move the tower upward, until it's completely visible.

This way, even if each texture is animated, the planes look still and the tower seem to build itself while in fact it's coming out from the ground.

Step 3 :
I transform the planes into combined cubes :

My problem is that I have to do the same, not with 8 frames sequences but with hundreds of frames ! (bigger and more interesting, with John Conway's Game of Life patterns)

Consequently, I can't manually assign hundreds of textures to hundreds of objects, then adjust the "Frame offset" on each one.

How do I make a script to automate this ?
Or have you got another idea ?

Help me please.

I managed do do something :

But I still have a problem:

As you can see in the video, I use planes instead of cubes most of the time.
But I still believe I could manage it with cubes, for example by creating a single object instead of a pile of thousands of planes (3000 in the last part of the video)
Take a look here to understand better :

Have any idea ?

I use those two scripts for the video:
