Visual effect for low poly model

Hi guys and gals,

I am having a hard time finding a way to visually display a shine effect emitting from a treasure chest opening animation in Maya.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas where to start?

It is a low poly treasure chest (387 polys so far, but looking to knock it down more) so I would like a low grade effect to match the chest. I was thinking of using a .png or .gif image on a plane with transparency but somehow I don't think the lack of animation of the plane would look good.

any thoughts and help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. My level of skill with Maya is in the grey area between amateur and intermediate, just putting that out there.

Could you put a light inside the treasure chest?

I used a cube, a PNG with transparency, and lights to emulate this without using over the top lighting effects.

It's sort of a hack approach but it works till I can think of something else.
